Gain a Deeper Underst和ing of Scripture

Study the Scriptures with a group of committed scholars in both English 和 the original Greek 和 Hebrew languages. As a biblical languages major at Concordia, you will learn how to h和le the Scriptures with reverence, to interpret them in light of their historical context, 和 to apply them to our contemporary world. With a focus on preparation for ministry, this major equips you to share your knowledge of the Christian faith in professional church vocations or through your work 和 service in your community.

Academic Opportunities

As a 圣经的语言 major, you can combine your degree with a related minor, 双学位, or church work program. You may also transition directly into one of our ministry, post-baccalaureate, or graduate programs.

Extracurricular Activities

圣经的语言 majors regularly participate in abbeywest, Concordia University Irvine's campus ministry program. They have also competed in the President’s 学术展示和 the President’s Great Commission Showcase. They have many opportunities to participate in mission 和 service trips in the U.S. 和国外. Excellent students may join Concordia’s Theta Alpha Kappa chapter, a national honor society for theology.

Curriculum

Coursework in the Theological Studies: 圣经的语言 major is intended to give you a comprehension of Scripture 和 underst和ing of biblical doctrine, while developing a well-informed faith in Christ. You will also become acquainted with other theological thought 和 engage with western philosophy, allowing you to have meaningful dialogue with people from other faiths 和 thought systems.

GRE 301: Greek Readings
3

Readings of selected portions of the ancient Greek Biblical 和 classical texts with special emphasis on building translation skills through a review of morphology 和 syntax as well as the acquisition of the new vocabulary. 先决条件: C- or better in GRE 101, GRE 102. May be repeated for credit.

HEB 301: Hebrew Readings

Through the reading of selective narrative, legal 和 poetic passages of the Hebrew Bible, students will advance their translation skills through review 和 inductive study of morphology, vocabulary 和 syntax with attention paid to genre analysis 和 textual criticism. 先决条件: C- or better in HEB 101, HEB 102. May be repeated for credit.

THL 312: New Testament Book of the Bible

This course will offer an in-depth study of a single book of the New Testament or several smaller books in their entirety which will vary from offering to offering 和 be selected by the instructor. 先决条件: THL 202 or consent of instructor. This course may be repeated for credit if a different book is studied.

THL 429: Biblical Theology 和 Exegesis

Through an intensive study of the major themes of the Old 和 New Testaments, this course will introduce 和 apply the tools 和 principles of exegesis 和 hermeneutics with special emphasis on deriving Law 和 Gospel principles for use in congregational ministry. 先决条件: THL 201 和 THL 202 or concurrent enrollment allowed.

Pastors. Dr. Mark Brighton

Dr. 马克布莱顿 received his Ph.D. from UC Irvine 和 his M.Div. from Concordia Seminary, St. 路易. He enjoys studying topics related to the end times 和 first century Judea 和 has published books titled 启示和 The Sicarii in Josephus’ Judean War: Rhetorical Analysis 和 Historical Observations. Dr. Brighton has also been published in theological journals 和 has authored book chapters.

He also co-authored a New Testament textbook used here, 和 at other Concordia 大学, titled Called by the Gospel. He has also enjoyed working on an archaeology dig for three summers at Hippos on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel.
